Getting started with Rolko

By Rolko EditorialPublished Updated

Choose your languages, read your first text, save useful words, and start reviewing.

This guide shows you how to study Korean with English translations. The steps are the same on desktop and mobile; on a phone, tap a word instead of hovering over it. Button names below match the English interface.

1. Choose your languages

After signing in, choose Korean under Study language and English under Translation language, then select Start learning. You can change your learning pair later using the language selectors in the app navigation. Words and reading progress belong to their learning pair; switching languages does not turn your existing vocabulary into another language.

2. Add one short text

Open Reading Workspace. Select Paste text in Korean, paste a short paragraph in the language you are learning, give it a title, and save it. Start with something you actually want to understand: a message, a short article, or a few lines from a conversation. A short text is easier to finish than a long document. On a phone, select Collapse study desk after saving to return to the reader.

3. Read and look up words

Open your text. Hover over an unfamiliar word on desktop, or tap it on mobile, to see its dictionary information. Use the available pronunciation/audio controls to hear it. Reveal the sentence translation when you need help understanding the whole sentence. Read the sentence again after the lookup so you connect the word to its context.

4. Save useful vocabulary

In the word popup, choose Learning for a word you want to practise. Use Learned when you already know it. Your saved words appear in Words, where you can search them and inspect their examples. If you want a word's source sentence saved for review, enable Save source sentence for reviews in Settings before saving it. Star a sentence when you want to keep the whole sentence.

5. Review when words are due

Open Review. Try to recall the answer before revealing it, then grade yourself honestly with Right or Wrong. Rolko schedules the next review from your answers. An empty due queue can simply mean your next reviews are scheduled for later; it does not mean your saved words disappeared.

6. Keep a simple routine

Read a little, save a few useful words, and complete the reviews that are due. Revisit the same text to notice what has become easier. You can find your vocabulary in Words and your learning history in Stats.

Import a video transcript

Instead of pasting text, you can use the URL import option for supported YouTube content. The source needs usable captions in Korean. Follow the import form's result; not every URL has an available transcript.

Use Rolko while browsing

On a supported desktop browser, open Get extension and follow the installation steps. Choose a supported study/translation pair in the extension and use it on compatible webpages or subtitle players. The website reading and review features also work without installing the extension.
