Turn real-life speaking gaps, voice notes, questions, and personal interests into high-ROI Chinese reading material you will actually use.
The highest-ROI Chinese material is usually not a random article. It is language connected to something you wanted to say, wanted to understand, or genuinely wanted to think about.
AI can generate that material in seconds. Rolko's Reading Workspace turns it into contextual reading: read the Chinese, hover or tap unknown words, save useful vocabulary with the exact sentence, and keep moving.
This guide gives you two repeatable workflows.
Whenever you are in a real situation and cannot express something in Chinese, do not let that gap disappear.
Write down:
Then give the situation to ChatGPT or another AI and ask for several natural ways to express the meaning, followed by more phrases you would realistically need in the same context.
I was in this situation: [describe the situation]. I wanted to say: [your meaning or attempted sentence], but I did not know how to express it naturally in Chinese. Give me 5 natural ways to say it, explain any important difference in tone, and then generate 50 more practical Chinese phrases I would realistically need in similar daily-life situations. Use natural spoken Mainland Chinese, not textbook Chinese. Keep every example specific and non-repetitive. Return Chinese only unless an explanation is necessary.
Examples of useful contexts include the gym, a date, a taxi, a restaurant, your apartment, a doctor, work, a delivery, a shop, or a difficult conversation.
Do not save every unknown word. Save vocabulary that is likely to reappear in your real life.
When Save source sentence for reviews is enabled in the Reading Workspace, saving an unknown word with an available source sentence stores that sentence as its default review example. If the preference is off, Rolko saves the word without that source sentence, so enable it before using this workflow when you want the context attached.
To preserve a sentence itself, click the star icon and save it as a Starred Sentence.
If you want to add a better example later, use the example-sentence controls on the Words page to save it for the word. Do not toggle a learned word to unlearned and back just to change its example: status changes affect its saved review progress.
This is even more powerful because the source material comes directly from your mind.
Open the voice-recording feature in ChatGPT—not the live voice conversation—and speak freely in English. Journal, explain a problem, develop an idea, ask a question, review your day, analyse an investment, or discuss any topic you genuinely care about.
Say everything you want to say. At the end of the recording, add this instruction:
Translate everything I just said into natural Chinese, preserving my meaning and tone. Then answer me in Chinese. Give me the Chinese translation of my voice note first, followed by your answer in Chinese.
Copy both parts into the Reading Workspace:
Then read the whole conversation. Hover or tap unknown words, save useful vocabulary, star valuable sentences, and optionally read important sections aloud.
You are now learning two kinds of highly relevant language at once:
Next time you discuss the same subject, you will have the words and sentence patterns available in Chinese instead of only in English.
Ask follow-up questions whenever the answer creates a new idea. At the end of each voice note or message, add:
Say what I just said in natural Chinese, then answer me in Chinese.
Paste the new translation and answer into the same Reading Workspace text, or create a new entry when the topic changes.
You can repeat this throughout the day. Use it for business ideas, relationships, health, travel, training, philosophy, technology, investing, personal decisions, or anything else that holds your attention.
Random content may teach useful Chinese, but it often contains vocabulary you do not care about and will rarely use.
This workflow selects material through your own life:
Interest keeps you reading. Relevance improves recall. Repeated contextual exposure turns a word from something you recognize into something you can use.
Give the AI enough context to choose the right Chinese. Tell it the relationship, setting, desired tone, and whether you want spoken or written language.
Useful instructions include:
If 50 phrases become repetitive, ask the AI to remove near-duplicates and group the remaining phrases by situation.
Use the speaking-gap workflow every time you notice something you cannot say.
Once per day, record one thought, question, or journal entry. Translate it, get the answer in Chinese, and spend at least 20 minutes reading the result in the Reading Workspace.
On days when you have more time, keep asking follow-up questions and continue reading. You can build hours of personalized input without searching for the perfect article, podcast, or textbook chapter.
Not for this workflow. Use whichever AI you already prefer, then move the useful Chinese into Rolko.
The AI creates or translates the material. The Reading Workspace handles the learning loop: contextual lookup, focused reading, vocabulary saving, example sentences, starred sentences, and repeated exposure.
A native AI integration may become useful later, but it is not required to get the full value of this method today.
Notice the gap. Explain the context. Generate useful Chinese. Import it. Read it. Save what matters. Use it in real life. Repeat.
Instead of studying random Chinese and hoping it becomes useful one day, start with what you already want to say and learn the Chinese for that.
Switch to Chinese and hover over every word to learn while reading. Save vocab instantly.
